Demand for social and mobile collaboration within the enterprise is growing, according to a recent study by ABI Research. A new wave of cloud-based, enterprise-caliber social tools and platforms are emerging as alternatives to email and other “legacy” collaboration platforms in the eyes of workers, the study found.

2012 will mark the first year that 3G and 4G mobile devices make up the majority of all worldwide smartphone sales, topping 50% for the first time ever, according to ABI Research.  Meanwhile, IDC predicts the worldwide mobile worker population is exploding, and will impact more than 1-in-3 users (1.3 billion) by 2015.

Enterprise mobile IT programs may get a lot easier with the next wave of mobile devices as Red Bend Software has released a major update to its mobile virtualization solution portfolio.  vLogix Mobile 5.0 looks to make it easier for IT to extend on-premise apps to mobile users and support BYOD for many smartphones, tablets and other wireless devices. 

Even as Bring Your Own Device policies at corporate firms are gaining momentum, IT admins admit there’s a lot more their companies need to do to support such any-device-goes mobile policies, according to a survey from Mimecast, a provider of cloud-based email management.

Business analytics provider Birst Inc. is offering a cloud-based Birst Mobile Business Intelligence (BI) Software Development Kit (SDK) for the Apple iPad. The new iOS SDK lets devs quickly and easily embed Birst’s interactive and visual business analytics into apps for iPad mobile devices.
