HP is teaming up with GS1 Canada supply chain experts to fine-tune the HP cloud computing platform for manufacturing to improve food safety and visibility across the supply chain. GS1 global standards are used by companies worldwide to improve safety, security and efficiencies of supply chains.

The HP/GS1 project demonstrates how cloud computing can be used to increase speed and accuracy of communications among partners and SCM members, especially when they agree on the data and business rules to be shared.

Under the project, HP and the GS1 Canada Product Recall Service will use the cloud to let companies across the food supply chain, share information, identify potential hazards, and cut down the time it takes to call and implement a recall, when necessary.

The cloud-based food safety platform will also save money managing the recall process, according to HP and GS1.

“Global supply chain standards are foundational to effective product recall,” said Art Smith, president and CEO of GS1 Canada, in a statement. “With the integration of GS1 standards and HP’s cloud computing platform, we are reinventing the way that recall information is exchanged between businesses, and further supporting industry efforts to improve consumer safety.”

The HP/GS1 service offers food companies these benefits:

  • Easy-to-understand handling, disposal, and reimbursement to accelerate the recall process
  • The ability to target specific retailers with relevant information
  • Built-in security that notifies authorized users and targeted retailers

One HP cloud executive said one key power from the cloud will arise from its ability to simplify complex rpocesses. “By simplifying the product recall process, we can demonstrate how cloud services add real value to our everyday lives,” said Russ Daniels, vice president and chief technology officer at EDS, an HP company.

Initially, the GS1 Canada Product Recall service will be rolled out for the Canadian food industry, but should be offered to other industries in the future, according to the companies.

The GS1 Canada Product Recall service, developed with HP Labs, consists of HP software, services and infrastructure as well as the Microsoft .NET Framework, the companies said.
