Alfresco Software Inc. and EnterpriseDB Corp. have forged a technology and business alliance aimed at helping make it easier for businesses to benefit from open source database, content and integration options.

Under the alliance, joint customers will also be able to run EnterpriseDB's Postgres Plus Advanced Server 8.3 with Alfresco Enterprise 3.1. The companies also said the alliance will allow them to provide their joint customers with coordinated, high-quality support and professional services.

Based on PostgreSQL, Postgres Plus Advanced Server is an open source relational database known for its transaction processing capabilities and its performance across a range of mixed load applications. Postgres Plus offers extends performance, scalability and reliability of PostgresSQL and allows applications written for Oracle to run with few or no changes.

John Powell, CEO, Alfresco Software said Alfresco Enterprise 3.1 and the partnership with EnterpriseDB will help extend the reach of open source ECM. "With this partnership our mutual customers will receive equivalent or better functionality than proprietary alternatives… Open source innovation is what current IT budgets demand," Powell said in a statement.

Alfresco fully integrates with the Microsoft SharePoint protocol, and supports the proposed Content Management Interoperability Services (CMIS) specification, which aims to give users choice of OS, database, application server and desktop.

Ed Boyajian, CEO, EnterpriseDB Corp., said the companies were cooperating to give customers the best products and the best service at much lower costs.

"EnterpriseDB offers a high powered Oracle-compatible database at a fraction of the cost of proprietary database solutions," said Boyajian in the statement. "An open source technology stack combining Postgres Plus Advanced Server and Alfresco Enterprise offers organizations a significant opportunity to reduce costs."
