Commodities trader Trafigura Ltd. is showing how SOA can improve risk assessmen in the volatile world of commodities trading. Using SOA and orchestration capabilities from Active Endpoints' ActiveVOS, Trafigura IT is driving better visibility, reliability and performance

Active Endpoints is the provider of ActiveVOS, a visual orchestration system for SOA and BPM projects that helps IT handle SOA and BPM projects with a unified environment that includes: graphical process modeling and design, a reliable and scalable execution engine, testing and deployment capabilities, an integrated complex event processing (CEP) engine.

Brown Study Ltd. a UK-based ActiveVOS partner, is leading the SOA redesign and implementation.

Mission 'Number One' was to convert Trafigura's legacy application assets into services, and then orchestrating them with ActiveVOS, according to Brown Study and Active Endpoints officials.

"Using ActiveVOS, we were able to reduce the time required for risk assessment reporting from between six to eight hours down to just 35 minutes," said Michael Marconi, director, Brown Study Ltd, in a statement. "Now that the risk assessment application is in production, it has proven to be highly robust - previously a challenge for Trafigura - and producing daily risk assessment reports is now stress-free. Traders can now far more easily assess risk, which drives the fundamental trading business for Trafigura."

Using ActiveVOS, developers, business analysts, operations staff and managers can develop, test, deploy, manage and maintain a new generation of 100% standards-based BPM applications affordably and quickly, the company said. Unlike the "stitched-together-through-acquisition" approaches of other vendors, ActiveVOS comes complete, the company said.

"Trafigura joins a growing list of customers who have moved from concept to production with ActiveVOS at record speed," said Eric Egertson, vice president, sales, Active Endpoints, in the statement. "Because ActiveVOS is an affordable, all-in-one BPM design, development and deployment environment, partners and customers can experience the benefits SOA-based development and achieve the kinds of impressive results that Trafigura did in record time."

Trafigura's new SOA-based risk assessment application is more reliable, performs better and can be extended more easily, according to Active Endpoints and Brown Study.

The companies documented the design-to-development details of the the business process management application. A whitepaper describing the project is available.
