Caspio Bridge Boosts Web 2.0 Support with Ajax, Mashups

Caspio is upgrading Web 2.0 capabilities in its Caspio Bridge web-based subscription database platform with more interactive and integration to support mashups, AJAX and security protections.

At its core, Caspio provides an easy-to-configure and scalable online database based on Microsoft SQL Server. Caspio Bridge also can be customized for users or integrated with enterprise IT using wizards

"While technically we are a platform-as-a-service technology, that's not the terminology we use to describe Caspio Bridge because we want to mainly communicate to the business user and non-developer," Caspio CEO Frank Zamani told IDN.

Caspio Bridge drastically cuts down on the need for web-to-database coding by offering business and IT users an intuitive web-based database environment, which can be customized and integrated with other web and conventional IT via point-and-click wizards. The result: Non-technical users can rapidly produce web database components for capturing, publishing, and managing data online.

Caspio's value proposition Zamani said, is to "help customers avoid spending a lot of time and money on using developers to migrate or integrate older applications with the Web and help customers provide more interactive, informative web applications, increase traffic, automate business processes, create self-service portals and even monetize database assets in new ways."

Caspio Bridge's Upgrades
New features in Caspio Bridge 6.0, announced at September's Web 2.0 in New York City, will support a variety of Web 2.0 projects:

  • Location-Based Applications (Database Mashups)
    Geocentric capabilities for data/map mashups with Yahoo! or Google, including a 'distance search' capability within a certain radius of a location or zip code. For larger databases, Caspio also adds support for mass geo-coding for assigning location tags to records in large databases.

  • Protection Against Robot SPAM and Harvesting (CAPTCHA)
    Single-click insertion of CAPTCHA 'human verification' technology for any application. This technology prompts users to enter security codes when submitting forms and searches, and blocks SPAM and data harvesting robots. A CAPTCHA audio recording is also available for visually impaired users. (Note: CAPTCHA stands for Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart

  • AJAX Interactivity
    Dynamic AJAX features for end-user applications, including cascading dropdowns and listboxes for dynamic granular filtering.

  • Web 2.0 Integration
    Integration with popular social networking and ecommerce sites, including YouTube, flickr, and PayPal. Caspio Bridge 6.0 also allows customers to further enhance the Web 2.0 features of their applications.


  • Inside Caspio's Database and PaaS Architecture
    Caspio has become a prominent online database and Platform-as-a-Service provider to large and mid-sized enterprises, media companies, government agencies and educational institutions.

    Caspio shrinks development time from weeks to hours, and from thousands of dollars to a small monthly fee. Caspio's customers range from one-person entrepreneurs to Fortune-500 corporations, digital media giants, government agencies, and educational institutions.

    "Our model early on was to empower the small group with focused business needs, who may not always have access to IT to do customized projects for them," Zamani told IDN. "Over time, we saw our focus on providing large companies a way to sidestep IT, and become an easy-to-use extension to corporate IT, could also be useful to small and mid-sized companies, and especially start-ups," he said.

    Customers use Caspio Bridge to integrate online or ecommerce systems with internal web or legacy systems; Capture and manage data from online users; Manage web-based content. User scenarios include: eCommerce, CRM, Order-taking/Order-tracking systems, patient/appointment tracking for doctor offices, and even corporate sales/call center support.
