Oracle is offering a packaged 'cloud computing' offering to enable corporate IT to better utilize Amazon's Web Services. The license bundles Oracle Database 11g, Oracle Fusion Middleware and Oracle Enterprise Manager.

This offering is designed to enable customers to more rapidly deploy Oracle solutions on Amazon Web Services' Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) environment. Customers can also use their existing software licenses on Amazon EC2 with no additional license fees.

"Providing choice is the foundation of Oracle's strategy to enable customers to become more productive and lower their IT costs - whether it's choice of hardware, operating system, or on demand computing - extending this to the Cloud environment is a natural evolution," said Robert Shimp, vice president Oracle Global Technology Business Unit. "We are pleased to partner with Amazon Web Services to provide our customers enterprise-class Cloud solutions, using familiar Oracle software on which their businesses depend."

Among Oracle offerings to promote corporate Amazon EC2 deployment are:

  • Oracle is offering a free set of Amazon Machine Images (AMIs), which allow new virtual machines to be provisioned with Oracle Database 11g, Oracle Fusion Middleware and Oracle Enterprise Linux fully-configured and ready to use within minutes.

  • Oracle has tuned its developer tools offerings for AWS across many product lines, including Oracle Application Express, Oracle JDeveloper, Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse and Oracle Workshop for WebLogic. The upgrades will support Amazon EC2 provisioning, automated software deployment and rapid design and build.

  • Oracle is offering secure Cloud-based backup via Oracle Secure Backup Cloud Module, which is based on Oracle Secure Backup. The new offering enables customers to use the Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) as their database backup destination. Oracle Secure Backup Cloud Module also enables encrypted data backups to help ensure complete privacy in the Cloud environment, and is fully integrated with Oracle Recovery Manager and Oracle Enterprise Manager.

  • Amazon officials are also offering a hand to enterprise IT, especially customers who need to quickly move large amounts of data in or out of Amazon's AWS cloud.

In speicifc, Amazon has opened its service to allow enterprise IT to create "network peering connections." Oracle and Amazon are also working on solutions that will enable cost effective, high volume backups and restores, even in network-bandwidth constrained environments, by means of physical import and export.

"For the first time, customers who want to run Oracle's industry-leading software to develop and deploy new, innovative applications in the cloud can do so with Oracle running on AWS," said Adam Selipsky, vice president of Product Management and Developer Relations for Amazon Web Services.
