Software AG is shipping a product suite to make it easier to update, integrate and optimize legacy systems for SOA.

The webMethods Application Modernization Suite-Discovery Edition offers powerful analytics, refactoring and visualization for COBOL, PL/I, RPG, C/C++ , VB and Java.

Software AG launched Discovery Edition to provide architecst and developers working on SOA and BPM integration projects a more in-depth understanding of complex applications. The Discovery Edition features let architects/devs document and analyze code bases to eliminate software deficiencies, increase application performance and allow existing code to be reused, Software AG executives said.

"While application modernization can deliver very significant ROI, the perceived risk associated with disrupting often decades-old code limits adoption," said Joe Gentry, Software AG's CTO for Enterprise Transaction Systems, in a statement. "The Discovery Edition helps to eliminate these concerns by providing developers with the knowledge and insight required to proceed confidently with application modernizations projects."

In specific, Discovery Edition offers code analytics and visualization, code refactoring, business rules identification and extraction, and a collaborative knowledgebase for managing software artifacts.

The Discovery Edition the company said.

Discovery Edition offers these modules for architects and developers:
  • Modernization Workbench - A collaborative knowledgebase for managing and storing software artifacts. The Modernization Workbench is the foundation for the Discovery Edition.
  • Application Analyzer - A tool that automatically catalogues existing code and artifacts, and generates in-depth diagrams, reports, metrics and documentation detailing the application.
  • Application Architect - Eliminates dead, inefficient and non-standard code while isolating proven business logic as reusable software components.

  • The offering, dubbed webMethods' Discovery Edition, is based on Software AG's global reseller agreement with Relativity Technologies. Discovery Edition is designed to work in tandem with webMethods Application Modernization Suite's SOA Edition, which exposes, orchestrates and governs critical functionality as standards-based services within a service-oriented architecture (SOA).
