Altova, creator of XMLSpy, is shipping an entry-level XML editor. Altova XMLSpy 2008 Standard Edition lets users view, validate and edit XML, DTD, XML Schema, XSLT, and XQuery.

Aside from XML editing, Altova also includes aspects of its expertise in XML data management, UML, and Web services tooling to Altova XMLSpy 2008 Standard Edition, Altova execs said.

"With the release of XMLSpy Standard Edition, we have responded to the requests of our customers by adding a tool for those who only need a basic XML editor," said Alexander Falk, President & CEO at Altova, in a statement. "Whether you need to view configuration files, maintain an RSS feed, or learn about working with XML, the new XMLSpy Standard Edition is a cost-effective solution for carrying out such tasks. But for developers creating more complex XML and Web services applications, you will still need the powerful features and functionality found only in XMLSpy Professional and Enterprise Editions."

Advanced Text View supports attractive printing, syntax coloring, line numbering, source folding, code completion, and more, to help users easily navigate and edit XML files, the company said.

For users starting a project from scratch, XMLSpy Standard Edition will generate a sample XML instance document from a DTD or XML Schema, the company said. Users may also view XML, DTD, and XML Schema files in Grid View and/or XMLSpy's graphical XML Schema View to view the data according to the document's hierarchical structure, according to the company.

XMLSpy 2008 Standard Edition, available for $149, provides numerous helpful features for viewing files and performing entry-level editing on XML documents as well as HTML and CSS files, according to Altova.
