Famed online retailer Overstock.com is using SOA powered by Oracle Fusion Middleware's Coherence in-memory data grid to power its popular Web store. The project went from design-to-live in under 2 months.

Overstock.com was looking for a way to prevent potential bottlenecks in its infrastructure because of the massive and unpredictable loads it experienced particularly during the busiest shopping day of the year, according to the companies.

Overstock.com's Java development team implemented Oracle Coherence implementation in just two months, the companies said. Oracle Database and Oracle Real Application Clusters provide the data foundation for Overstock.com's SOA architecture and Oracle Coherence provides added performance, scalability, resilience and reduced downtime.

With Oracle Coherence 3.3, Overstock.com now delivers fast and reliable access to frequently searched data. That means customer search response times have increased by nearly 100% and guided navigation response times have increased by over 200%, the companies said.

Inside Oracle Coherence at Overstock.com
Oracle Coherence provides replicated and distributed (partitioned) data management and caching services on top of a reliable, highly scalable peer-to-peer clustering protocol. Coherence has no single points of failure; it automatically and transparently fails over and redistributes its clustered data management services when a server becomes inoperative or is disconnected from the network. When a new server is added, or when a failed server is restarted, it automatically joins the cluster and Coherence fails back services to it, transparently redistributing the cluster load. Coherence includes network-level fault tolerance features and transparent soft re-start capability to enable servers to self-heal.

"Online shoppers expect they will be able to search for products and get an immediate and relevant response," said Sam Peterson, senior vice president of technology for Overstock.com, in a statement. "If the search process takes more than a second, the customer moves on to another site and we lose credibility and a potential sale. We put Oracle Coherence to the test on the busiest shopping day of the year, Cyber Monday, and we were very pleased with the consistently high performance the site delivered on customer searches, despite the additional workload."

Oracle Coherence, a component of Oracle Fusion Middleware, allows users to push data closer to the application for faster access and greater resource utilization, according to Oracle. Oracle Coherence helps provide continuous data availability and transactional integrity, even in the event of a server failure, by automatically and dynamically partitioning data in-memory across multiple servers, Oracle said

In addition to Oracle Database and Oracle Coherence, Overstock.com also runs Oracle enterprise resource planning applications.
