The purchase of Cognos by IBM has produced a number of jointly developed service-oriented architecture (SOA) offerings for a range of business sectors.

Cognos, a world-leading provider of business intelligence (BI) and performance management solutions, was bought by IBM for $5 billion last November. The acquisition has led to the development of ten new solutions to serve organizations in banking, retail, healthcare, government, life sciences and manufacturing.

Under the banner of Information on Demand, the product range represents a meeting of minds between Cognos' BI expertise and IBM's strength in SOA. Information on Demand proposes not only to bring industry-specific solutions to the fingertips of businesses, but also to aid in best practice, planning and other management areas.

For the healthcare sector, a new Health Analytic solution has been designed to optimize performance in everything from financial functions to daily operational tasks. IBM Workforce Analytics - a product on which IBM and Cognos began working prior to the buyout - has also been created for human resources divisions.

Manufacturers will be able to benefit from a new forecasting SOA. Harnessing Cognos' Sales and Operations Planning Performance Blueprints, the enhanced architecture will provide comprehensive and responsive data to managers to enable them to better plan ahead. Another Blueprint, Municipal Scorecard, has been devised for the public sector.

Other offerings include the Financial Risk Insight for Banking and the Risk-Adjusted Profitability for Banking solutions and the Life Sciences Promotional Spend and Compliance solution.

All of the new products, Ambuj Goyal, general manager of IBM Information Management claims, will allow companies to further their competitive advantage by improving data integrity.

"The combination of IBM and Cognos is enabling us to deliver new business insights to clients via a comprehensive portfolio of industry solutions that tap into the most complete, open standards-based business intelligence and performance management platform," he says.
